Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this series, participants will be better able to:
1. Characterize dementia, delirium, and depression
2. Differentiate dementia from other conditions
3. Describe differential approaches to speech therapy for people living with dementia
4. Discuss barriers and the importance of engaging people living with dementia in decisions about how technology is used in their care  
5. Identify two common outcomes that could be improved by adopting trauma-informed practices
6. Identify diagnostic criteria and other relevant terminology related to Mild Cognitive Impairment 
7. Integrate the 4 M principles of geriatric medicine into a holistic approach for addressing the housing needs of patients
8. Identify how aging and cognitive decline impact sleep

Barbara Cochrane, PhD, RN, FAAN

Our series is organized, planned, and moderated by the fantastic Barbara Cochrane. Dr. Cochrane is our Northwest Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Center’s Co-Director and Professor Emeritus in the School of Nursing. Her work focuses on older women’s health and healthy aging, specifically positive aspects of aging, symptoms in older women, breast cancer prevention and survivorship, and cardiovascular health.

  • University of Washington Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)

    UW Continuing Nursing Education requires a $45 processing fee for a contact hour certificate for the series. 

    15 contact hours (1.5 per session)

    • Continuing Nursing Education at the University of Washington School of Nursing (UWCNE) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
    • UWCNE is approved as a clock hour provider by the Washington State Board of Education.
    • Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #7128, for 15 contact hours (1.5 per session).

    Psychologists:  UWCNE qualifies as a Washington State CE program sponsor under WAC 246-924-240

    Social Workers and Counselors:  UWCNE qualifies as a Washington State CE program sponsor under WAC 246-809-601

    All Other Disciplines:  A UWCNE certificate for up to 15 contact hours (1.5 per session) will be awarded for documenting completion of this offering.

    HOW TO OBTAIN PROFESSIONAL CREDIT:
    We partner with University of Washington, Continuing Nursing Education (UW CNE) to provide continuing education credit. Please complete for CE Credit, there is a $45 processing fee.

    1. Go to Geriatric Healthcare Series Spring 2024 | CE Credit
    2. Log in to your UW CNE account or create a new one.
    3. Ignore the current status “Not Enrolled”
    4. Click on “Take this Course”
    5. Check out and pay the $45 processing fee
    6. Your certificate will be emailed to you from cne@uw.edu

  • The AAFP has reviewed Spring 2024 Dementia Geriatric Healthcare Series, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 03/28/2024 to 05/30/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

    There is no processing fee for Continuing Medical Education.

    HOW TO OBTAIN PROFESSIONAL CREDIT:
    The Geriatric Healthcare Series has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 15 prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    For AAFP Members: The AAFP offers five convenient ways to report credit (there is no fee):

    1. Report your CME online.
    2. Reach out to nwgwec@uw.edu to obtain your Attendance Certificate. 
    3. Fax your completed Attendance Certificate Confirmation to (913) 906-6075.
    4. Call the AAFP Member Resource Center at (800) 274-2237 (8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. CT).
    5. Mail your Attendance Certificate to the AAFP Member Resource Center, 11400 Tomahawk Creek Parkway, Leawood, KS 66211-2672.

    For Non-AAFP Members: Contact your respective organization to ensure they accept our credit.
